The Algorithmic Feed

Vitamodo School · Bundle 10: Children and Information Hygiene · Brochure 4 of 10 · Version 1.0

Andris Saulitis, MD

For those who: have accepted from 10.1–10.3 the foundation, the reader-vs-consumer distinction, and the three-pencils method, and who now want the substantive specific-pattern brochure on the most acute contemporary developmental hazard — the algorithmic feed (short-form video, infinite scroll, recommendation engine) as one engineered substrate that exploits variable reward to train the developing attention and dopamine systems, and the substantive parental work that calibrates the substrate during the developmental window.

Not for those who: are confronting the bundle's foundation for the first time. Read 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 first; this brochure is the first specific-pattern application, and the foundation, the distinction, and the hero method are the substrate the application sits on.

What this is — the clinical reality

This is the fourth brochure of Bundle 10. The first three established the foundation: the information environment is doing developmental work whether one calibrates it or not; the difference between the reader and the consumer is the developmental fork; the three pencils on a white sheet are the procedure that turns information-encounter from consumption into reading. This brochure is the first of the bundle's specific-pattern brochures — the brochures that take a particular contemporary information-environment substrate and address what the parental work looks like when applied to it specifically. The substrate this brochure addresses is the algorithmic feed.

The algorithmic feed is the substrate most parents now recognise as the most acute developmental hazard their child encounters. The short-form video stream — the TikTok feed, the Instagram Reels, the YouTube Shorts — and the broader category they belong to, the algorithmically curated infinite scroll, are not simply «another form of media» the child engages with. They are an engineered training environment with measurable design features that work on the developing attention and dopamine systems in ways that the older substrates of book, broadcast television, and conversation did not.

A note on substrate honesty before we go further. The algorithmic-feed territory is recent — recent enough that the published clinical literature is still catching up with the lived clinical reality. Andris's primary treatment of this specific substrate lives in the spoken material — the children-and-gadgets video series, the dopamine-system lectures, the personal-meeting discussions of how the contemporary environment shapes developing brains. The published-book substrate addresses the underlying mechanisms — the limbic-takeover passage in «The Hospital of Consciousness», the limbic-emotional-brain biology in «Psychosomatics Without Esotericism», the environment-shapes-neural-patterns foundation in «Above the Clouds There Is Always Sun» — and the brochure draws those mechanisms forward and applies them to the contemporary substrate. This is the honest provenance methodology the bundle's work rests on: the mechanism substrate comes from where the books treat it; the contemporary application is named where the spoken material treats it.

Three frames carry the algorithmic-feed question.

The first frame is the substantive mechanism. The clinical territory the brochure addresses.

The mechanism has five components that operate as one substrate. The first is algorithmic curation — the personalisation engine that selects what each individual user encounters based on the engagement signals the user has produced. The curation is not neutral selection; it is the optimisation of what the user will not look away from. The child's feed is not what the child has chosen; it is what the algorithm has determined the child will engage with next, calibrated continuously against the child's measured response.

The second is variable reward — the same psychological mechanism gambling, lottery, and addictive behaviours exploit. The user does not know what the next swipe will produce; sometimes it produces strong reward, sometimes nothing, sometimes negative reward; the variability is what sustains the engagement past the point at which fixed-reward engagement would have ended. The contemporary spoken treatment in Andris's material names this directly: with the lottery ticket, the brain is rewarded for the action — the going to buy the ticket — by endorphins; the variable possibility of jackpot, even at near-zero probability, sustains the action; the brain has been deceived; the same mechanism is what the feed delivers continuously.
